Is NYLT Right For Your Youth?

NYLT is a demanding six-day course.

Content is delivered in a troop and patrol outdoor setting with an emphasis on immediate application of learning in a fun environment. Interconnecting concepts and work processes are introduced early, built upon, and aided by the use of memory aids, which allows participants to understand and employ the leadership skills much faster. Built on the legacy of past JLT successes, the new NYLT integrates the best of modern leadership theory with the traditional strengths of the Scouting experience. Through activities, presentations, challenges, discussions, and audio-visual support, NYLT participants will be engaged in a unified approach to leadership that will give them the skill and confidence to lead well. Through a wide range of activities, games, and adventures, participants will work and play together as they put into action the best Scouting has to offer.

The course also has the following requirements for Boy Scouts:

  • to be at least 13 years of age by start of course
  • attained rank of First Class
  • have attended a week long resident camp
  • completed Troop Leader Training (TLT) or Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops (ILST)
  • Signature of their Scoutmaster

For Varsity, Sea Scouts, and Venturing:

  • to be 14 years of age by start of course
  • completed Crew Officer Orientation, the Venturing Leadership Skills Course (VLSC), or Introduction to Leadership Skills for Crews (ILSC)
  • Signature of their unit leader

Learning Valuable Lifetime Skills

The NYLT course centers around the concepts of what a leader must BE, what he must KNOW, and what he must DO. The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on HOW TO. The skills come alive during the week as the patrol goes on a Quest for the Meaning of Leadership.


What is Expected of Parents

Donations

This course takes a huge amount of time and effort by the staff to put on each year. You can help by donating additional cash or materials we can use on the course. The donation request form in the registration packet is a wish list of materials we need. We sincerely thank the parents of the recent course participants who have generously donated to allow us to upgrade our GPS units and TV monitors for the presentations.

For the 2015 we are looking for 20 new-ish patrol boxes of the same design. The one's we're using are over 10 years old and getting hard to repair. Please contact the  Program Donations Coordinator (name and contact on the form) for details on the size and design desired.

Parent Forms

You'll need to submit a Participant application, the Part ABC BSA medical form, and supplental forms in the Registration packet. All these can be found on the Registration Forms page.


Silver Beaver Alumni Association Scholarships

Dear Scouts/Scouters/Parents and/or Guardians,

The Orange County Council Silver Beaver Alumni Association (SBAA) makes every effort to award financial aid for training opportunities when circumstances warrant it. The vast majority of resources are dedicated to families with financial need. However, on a case-by-case basis depending on resource availability there may be a limited allocation based on merit. The SBAA Committee reviews each application in strict confidentiality and makes scholarship allocation decisions based on the information you provide in this application.

All families are strongly encouraged to check their local community agencies for scholarships in addition to those that may be provided by the SBAA. Many organizations offer scholarships for youth educational and leadership experiences. These include Faith Based Organizations, fraternal organizations, (VFW, ELKS, F&AM, LIONS, Troop, etc.)

Scholarship applications must be properly completed. They must be submitted to the Orange County Council SBAA '''no later than three months prior''' (approximately the 3rd week of April for NYLT) to the training or program. Applications can be submitted via fax or email or can be delivered to the Orange County Council Volunteer Service Desk. Please note that all scholarship applications require submission of the family’s combined annual income. Scholarship decisions cannot be made without the statement of family income.
